Sore throat (throat pain) is a common physical symptom usually caused by acute pharyngitis (inflammation of pharynx), inflammation of glottis,


Inflammation may be due to a viral or bacterial infection or it may be a result of a previous trauma.

Causes:

some causes of sore throat are given below.

  1. Breathing through mouth can cause a sore throat and pain.
  2. common viruses e.g flu virus and mononucleosis virus can cause sore throat
  3. sinus drainage can case sore throat.
  4. Streptococcus and arcanobacterium cause sore throat.
  5. the sore throat which appears due to antibiotic use or chemotherapy is caused by candida commonly known as thrush.
  6. a sore throat which remains for more than two week may be a sign of serious illness such as AIDs or throat cancer.

Home Treatment and cure of Sore throat.
  • Salt water gargles provide temporary relief.
  • hard candies are good.
  • sprays such as chloraseptic and lozenges are also good for pain relief.
  • A humidified air is useful in sore throat caused by dry air or breathing through mouth.
  • Over the counter medicines like Acetaminophen (paracetamol) and ibuprofen are good for pain relief.
  • Adults with blocked nose should use nasal sprays to dilate nasal opening and to prevent breathing through nose.
Note: if you have other diseases like hypertension or ischemic heart disease consult your doctor and if sore throat is associated with fever of tender and swollen neck consult doctor immediately.

Signs and symptoms of sore throat:
  • pain and discomfort in the throat area (front of the neck.)
  • pain or discomfort in swallowing. 
  • tenderness and swellings in the front of the neck (swollen lymph nodes)
  • fever (strep throat)
  • feel of itching and dryness in the throat.
usually pain and discomfort are considered enough to diagnose sore throat. fever and tenderness help to explore and catch the cause.

Prevention of Sore throat.
in Cold sore throat is common, because cold air constrict the blood vessels and cause dryness in the throat.
Breathing through is not a good habit. it causes dryness of throat and sore throat.
DNS (deviated nasal septum) blocks the nasal openings and the patient is then forced to breath through mouth. If you have DNS consult ENT specialist.
